How to write a Media Pitch to a Journalist

Media pitches are written to journalists (generally by PR companies on behalf of a company) in order to increase awareness of a newsworthy person/story.

The goal of a Media Pitch is to make the journalist interested - in essence, you are asking them if they wish to write a story for you (which you then look over to ensure that it’s okay) which is then to be published elsewhere.

You, as a business owner, (or the PR company) write to them in a more conversational way compared to that of a press release. In a Press Release you essentially just write an article for it to be copy and pasted.

Compared to a Press Release, a Pitch does not require you to add in an image as the goal is to build interest and ask the journalist if they wish to write about the person or company in question. You can also give ideas to the Journalist of what they could write about.

The journalist will receive your Pitch and send over questions or arrange an interview with the client to ask questions and get more knowledge on topics. Therefore, it is required that you put in contact information from the PR company (if you used one) - including email address and phone number - as Journalists will get in touch with them first. You could prompt them to set up a telephone interview at the end of the message.

  • E.G. Paying less tax.
  • E.G. How much can you borrow for a mortgage if you’re self-employed.
  • Idea/Title three
  • Idea/Title four
  • Idea/Title five
  • Etc
  • Etc
